2001 toyota rav4 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new design increases size, power and visual appeal. introductiontoyota has completely redesigned and re-engineered its rav4 for 2001. The all-new toyota rav4 is more refined than the previous-generation model and it's much better looking.  toyota's rav4 was a front-runner in the mini-suv market from the get-go, and not entirely by default. True, it was the earliest of mini suvs, which gave it a competitive advantage; but being built on the platform of the proven camry certainly helped its reliability and its user friendliness. But during the five-year run of the first-generation rav4, a steady stream of asian challengers appeared, such as the honda cr-v, suzuki grand vitara and kia sportage. And now there's the highly rated ford escape, an asian-american. Plus $480 delivery, processing and handling.  anti-lock brakes might be the best value in there. The length, width, height, wheelbase, and track have all been increased. That sounds more stable to us. Contributing more to improved stability, at least on paper, is the fact that the wheelbase has increased 3. 1 inches while the overall length has grown by just 1. 3 inches to 165. 1 inches, which is still 10. 5 inches shorter than a subaru forester and 12. 5 inches shorter than a honda cr-v. The overall picture here is of an expanded cabin placed on a lower, wider platform.  the styling is dynamic, resulting from extensive sheetmetal reshaping. The old rav4 might have been seen as either cute or cobbly, depending upon the eyes of the beholder, but the new one is striking and aggressive looking. In one overnight swoop, it's gone from endearing to sexy. The lines suggest a vector or wedge shape, which is pretty hard to do with a basic tall, small box. This is mostly accomplished by a sloping hood and downward cant from the rear quarter panels forward, under the side windows. When the arched roofline ends with the optional spoiler, the result is cool looking. And as if to celebrate the redesign, five of the seven colors in 2001 are new; only black and white are carried over.  the cladding and body molding is smoother, the fender flares around 16-inch wheels are beefy for a mini suv, and styling scoops in the sides and hood show a big try at being eye-catching, maybe too much as the sheetmetal touches are pretty far beyond function. Combination taillights wrap nicely around the sides. At the nose, the headlights are shaped like wasp eyes, angling upward. Optional foglights are built into the airdam, which also contains a gaping grille with a few teeth. The gray body cladding looks good with some colors, but contrasts poorly with others.  the optional alloy wheels are a simple five-spoke star pattern, and the optional cover over the spare, hanging on the rear gate, serves its purpose in making the rav4 look less rough, but therefore less rugged. The rear hatch swings horizontally, hinged at the right side (inconveniently against the curb), and the weight of the tire is noticeable; however the step up into the cargo compartment is made easy by the reduced ground clearance. Underneath, maybe to accomplish this, the gas tank has shrunk from 15. 3 to 14. 7 gallons. interioran important object of the redesign was more cabin room. With the 50/50 split bench rear seats removed, there's now 68. 3 cubic feet of cargo volume available, compared to 57. 9 in the old rav4. There's also more cargo space behind the rear seats than before, as well as 2. 9 more inches of legroom in the front. The legroom is ample, and the driver's footrest allows even more stretch. The seats have been narrowed at the hips by 2. 4 inches, but we didn't feel squeezed. By day, the gauges are a sort of metallic off-white, and by night they glow sort of orange. Admittedly, these aren't quite as legible as boring old white on black gauges. Directly ahead are three circles: speedo on left, temp/fuel/warning lights and gear indicator in the circle on the right, and nicely balanced between and above them in a smaller circle is the neat-looking tach. Redline runs from 6500 to 8000 rpm, pointless because the power peaks at 6000 rpm.  climate controls are mercifully simple. There's a stubby stalk for the cruise control on the steering wheel, under the wiper stalk on the left side of the steering column. There are two big cupholders forward of the natty leather-wrapped e-brake lever between the seats, an accessory power outlet, and a small space near the console that's intended for change but big enough for cellphones. Sunglass holders too, under the steering wheel, and vanity mirrors with extensions and lights on each visor. No surprise, given toyota's track record-witness everything from the 1. 5-liter echo to the v8 tundra to the 900-horsepower cart champ car engine. It's the same 2. 0 liters as the previous generation rav4 powerplant, but because it's all aluminum it weighs 40 less pounds. It's also more efficient, delivering 23/27 mpg, best in class.  it makes 148 horsepower (up by 21) and 142 foot pounds of torque (up by 10). This also makes it way better for towing.  acceleration in the 4wd with automatic transmission is lively and feels almost effortless, as if the 2943-pound vehicle were featherweight. The transmission never strained to stay with the power-well, maybe once, travelling up a long freeway hill with the cruise control set on 74 mph. When it shifted down into third there was a big gulp, like the little engine that paused to say, 'i think i can.' and it did.  around-town handling and parking-lot maneuvering is wonderfully nimble; again, the rav4 feels even lighter than its 2943 pounds. On the highway, the power rack-and-pinion steering is precise, with no dodginess; the stretched wheelbase likely contributes to the improvement here. In gusty winds, however, the rav4 wanders quite a bit.  there's little that's truck-like about the suspension. The independent front suspension uses macpherson struts with l-shaped control arms, while the rear suspension is a double wishbone with coil springs and nitrogen-filled shock absorbers. The redesign includes softer spring rates, larger bushings and a longer suspension stroke. Chassis and suspension take bumps with equanimity, and offer a ride as good or better than many larger suvs. Maybe even more impressively, there's no detectable pitching or tipping, which is no mean feat for any suv.  finally, the brakes, which are plenty big enough for the weight, with 10. 7-inc. New structure, new styling, new interior. introductionthe impala has been changing, morphing, and maturing with the vagaries of the market since 1958 when the first one showed up as a coupe and convertible.  now, the chevrolet impala has been substantially upgraded for 2006. The 2006 impala features new and very attractive exterior styling, a new interior, and a choice of three new engines.  the new impala is a comfortable and convenient car, roomy, easy to get in, with big grab-style door handles. It's a practical sedan with innovative flip-and-fold back seats and folding rear seatbacks. And it comes well-equipped with safety features, including side-curtain airbags. The impala lt best exemplifies the model line, especially when ordered with the larger, 3. 9-liter engine, which delivers responsive performance. The ltz upgrades with leather, a very nice xm satellite radio setup and other convenience features.  an inexpensive pricing structure with loads of rebates on it puts the new impala on the shopping list for family sedans. Impala competes with the ford five hundred, chrysler 300, dodge charger, honda accord, toyota camry, and nissan altima.  the ss stuffs a small-block v8 into this package. It comes with the bare essentials, such as air conditioning, power windows and locks, am/fm/cd, cruise control, cloth upholstery, a bench seat, and 16-inch steel wheels. Anti-lock brakes are optional 600).  the lt is available with the 3. 5-liter v6 21,860) or a new 3. 9-liter v6 24,760), which includes 17-inch alloy wheels. The ss comes with 18-inch wheels and tires and a performance suspension.  safety features that come standard include dual front smart air bags, and side-curtain roof-mounted air bags. Underneath, it gets a stiff new body and chassis structure, retuned suspensions with a 10-mm wider track, and new 16-, 17- and 18-inch wheels and tires.  the ls, lt and ltz share one front end design, while the ss has a completely different nose architecture. interiorthe new impala has a lot going for it inside as well, with a completely new, cleaned-up interior, reshaped and reupholstered seats, and flip/fold rear seats.  we felt pretty comfortable overall inside the impala. The seats have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support than previous models. We didn't find the ss seats particularly comfortable or supportive, with too much lumbar support and not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners. Optional leather-covered seating has a new style of seams around the perimeter and french seams on the center sections.  the impala also has a new twin-brow instrument panel design that wraps around into the door panels. Ls, lt and ltz models have a wood trim, with brushed silver trim optional. The impala ss comes standard with metallic trim panels, with wood trim as an option. We found the panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. We found the interior materials at least one grade better than the usual chevrolet stuff.  the optional dual-zone climate control system can have up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. It's a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The dashboard has an expanded driver information center, now with more than 50 different alerts, depending on the vehicle's equipment. The base audio system includes am/fm/cd and six speakers. An optional mp3/cd-radio is configured for xm satellite radio, with a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. The optional icdx radio adds an in-dash six-cd changer. All radios include a standard auxiliary input jack for external devices such as an ipod or remote cassette player.  the rear seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The rear seat cushions flip forward to create a covered storage area under the seat (with cushions down) and grocery bag hooks when the cushions are flipped. The seatback also folds down flat to create a large pass-through port to the trunk.  trunk space, at 18. 5 cubic feet, is more than competitive in the segment, and it has a huge opening for easy loading. driving impressionthe new chevrolet impala comes with a new generation of v6 engines. We found them to be smooth and quiet if not bristling with power. Variable valve timing is a first for the impala's cam-in-block v6 engines. The system changes the orientation of the camshaft, automatically adjusting the timing of the intake and exhaust valves for better performance, economy, and emissions. Thus, a system that started out on very expensive imported cars has now reached down to the lowly chevy v6 engines and made them better.  the 3. 5-liter v6 that comes on lt and ls models generates 211 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. The 3. 9-liter v6 that comes on ls and ltz models produces 242 horsepower and 242 pound-feet of torque. We're expecting both engines to earn fuel economy ratings of about 19/29 mpg city/highway.  with 303 horsepower, the impala ss has more power and torque than any other entry in the class, but the chassis that comes with the v8 needs taming. While we appreciated the extra power and torque available in a kickdown or passing situation, and we loved the brawny, muscular sound of this engine at full throttle, it's a challenge to launch cleanly and quickly at the same time. Besides wheelspin, there's a lot of torque steering. This system helps provide up to 8 percent better fuel economy in light-load driving conditions. However, there is a lot of pitch, dive, and body roll in this chassis, and a lot of uncertain driving moments with the added power of the ss. Steering is over-assisted, fairly numb and uncommunicative.  the impala's front suspension is a macpherson strut coil-over-spring independent design, with gas-charged struts and a stabilizer bar with new, taller jounce bumpers. The rear suspension uses a trailing arm, tri-link setup with gas-charged struts and coil springs. A rear stabilizer bar is standard on all models. The new abs includes electronic brake-force distribution. summarythe new chevrolet impala represents an improvement over previous models. The 3. 5 and 3. 9 v6 lt and ltz versions are pleasing to drive overall. While the ss cuts a conservative but dashing figure with its quiet badging and giant five-spoke, 18-inch wheels, it's got more power than it k. New flagship delivers elegance, ride, handling. introductionbuick is overhauling its lineup and the lucerne is the second new car, following last year's introduction of the lacrosse. In keeping with tradition, the 2006 buick lucerne is positioned as an affordable entry-level full-size luxury car. The lucerne replaces the lesabre and the park avenue, which are no longer being made.  buick says the v6 models compete with the toyota avalon and lexus es 330, and likes to compare the v8 models with the infiniti m and lexus gs, which cost much more than the top of the line lucerne cxs. In any case, we found the new lucerne to be a plush, highly competent full-size sedan at a compelling price.  buick's new flagship sedan boasts clean lines suggestive of fine german sedans, while maintaining buick traditions. Inside, it's elegant and comfortable and easy. Underway, the lucerne is smooth and quiet, but its steering is precise and it handles winding roads with aplomb. These are benefits of a new chassis and structure the lucerne shares with the all-new 2006 cadillac dts. The dts and lucerne represent gm's new, full-size, front-wheel-drive luxury sedans.  the most enjoyable of the new buicks is the lucerne cxs with its magnetic ride control, a sports suspension developed for the corvette and cadillac xlr that further improves handling. Yet we might opt for the lucerne cxl v6, a very enjoyable car to drive, with agile handling and plenty of performance. lineupthe 2006 buick lucerne is offered in three trim levels. All come standard with a comprehensive list of safety features including six airbags that include a dual-stage driver's bag and a dual depth front passenger bag. Traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a tire pressure monitor are standard on all models. Six-passenger seating is available by ordering the front bench seat 250). The optional comfort and convenience package 450) includes features an electrochromic rearview mirror, universal home remote, illuminated visors with vanity mirrors, intermittent front wipers with rainsense, and body-colored outside power, heated, mirrors. Cxs also has upgraded leather seats with eight-way power seats with memory for driver and front passenger. The cxs also features a nine-speaker, 280-watt harman kardon audio system with xm satellite radio.  options for the lucerne include heated/cooled front seats; factory-installed remote start; ultrasonic rear parking assist; rain-sensing windshield wiper system; the first heated windshield washer fluid application in its class; six-disc in-dash cd changer with mp3 capability; and a dvd-based navigation system. walkaroundthere is no mistaking the lucerne for anything other than a buick. The lucerne has a handsome appearance with a good stance thanks to its long wheelbase and wide track. The classic buick waterfall grill blends in well with the large integrated headlamps. The side profile, with its steeply raked windshield, is reminiscent of several recently introduced european sedans such as the vw passat and audi a6. The rear of the lucerne features a high trunk line with nicely integrated tail lamps.  chrome trim is kept to a minimum. The only stylistic link to buicks of old are the small portholes on each side of the front fenders. That means the lucerne benefits from the newest techniques for building a quiet luxury car.  these include hydroformed frame rails for a stiffer body and use of laminated steel with plenty of sound deadening material placed in strategic locations. Buick engineers shaped the outside of the door mirrors to lessen wind noise. Laboratory test results show that the lucerne is quieter than a lexus es 330 and this was evident in a back-to-back driving comparison.  much like the exterior, the lucerne's interior is cleanly designed with just enough touches of wood and chrome trim to make it luxurious without being too opulent. The dashboard is fairly traditional in design with a smallish instrument pod containing three round gauges in front of the steering wheel.  the center stack with large knobs for operating the climate control and audio system is located high up for easy access.  six airbags provide plenty of protection in a crash. Along with the cadillac dts, the lucerne gets the first ever application of a dual-depth passenger airbag. It has two sections; a smaller section deploys in a less severe crash or if the passenger is small or seated nearer the dashboard. In a bad crash or if the passenger is not wearing their seat belt the full bag deploys for maximum effect.  for those who need seating for six, buick continues to offer a traditional front bench seat in all but the performance cxs model. Most people opt for front bucket seats, which provide a good level of comfort and have an armrest in the center console.  rear-seat passengers are well taken care of with good headroom and excellent leg room. The lucerne handled with aplomb, exhibiting no wallowing or causing any untoward moments. A rigid chassis is the key to balance sharp handling with a smooth ride, and the new lucerne really delivers.  the lucerne's ride is excellent, thanks to the long wheelbase and stiff body structure. In back-to-back driving along a stretch of less than perfect road, we found the lucerne's ride quality comparable to that of the benchmark 2006 toyota avalon. Magnetic ride control uses magnetically charged particles suspended in a synthetic fluid to continuously adjust the fluid's viscosity to varying road surfaces and driving characteristics. The system, which first appeared on the sporty cadillac xlr and then the corvette, delivers a quicker response than conventional valve-damping systems. We tried a cxs with the system and found it did handle better but not significantly.  indeed, when we tried a cxl v6 we were pleasantly surprised at just how well it performed. With the lighter v6, the cxl seemed more agile on twisty roads and the front end felt a bit lighter. The v6 models also suffer less from torque steer, a slight tugging felt through the steering wheel when turning and accelerating at the same time.  so which model? We were pleased with its performance. However, gm's excellent stabilitrak electronic stability control system is available with the v8 models, which improves driving control by reducing the chance of skidding.
